Abstract: In the scope of optimizing the matrix of High Temperature Reactor fuel elements it was the aim of the presented report to improve the knowledge on the pyrolysis of phenolic-formaldehyde resins used as binder material for the graphitic components. By means of thermal gravimetry, mass spectrometry, infra-red spectrometricmeasurements and gas generation analysis six selected resol- and novolac resins were investigated. The report describes the influence of the nature of the resin, the influence of the mole ratio formaldehyde/phenol in the raw materials and the influence of the heat treatment (isothermal or non-isothermal) on the pyrolysis and on the yield of coke. By setting up a mass balance there is given a possibility for a quantitative illustration of the progress of pyrolysis and also a contribution to clarify the carburisation mechanism.
